Which Free Claude Course Should You Actually Take?
If you're an L1 tech reading this, here's a question I get a lot: "Where do I even start with AI?"
I'm Calvin. I currently manage an IT service desk, and before this I spent years running service operations and end-user support teams — including a stretch leading a service desk team of 12 across AMER, EMEA, and APAC, and before that, running a 24x7 Network Operations Center supporting a team of 16 and over 7,000 end users. I'm also back in school finishing my degree in Management Information Systems, so I know exactly what it's like to try to learn something new while your plate is already full.
These days I spend a good chunk of my time coaching teams and consulting on ITSM practices — helping small IT shops run tighter, smarter operations without needing a huge budget. So when Anthropic (the company behind Claude) rolled out a whole library of free training, I did what I always do before I hand something to my team: I went through it myself first.
Here's the deal, in plain language, no slang, no fluff.
Anthropic Just Opened a Free AI School
It's called Claude Academy, and it's bigger than most people realize — more than 25 free courses and over 350 total learning resources when I last checked, including tutorials and real use-case walkthroughs, not just video lectures. All of it is free. No subscription, no credit card. You sign up with an email and you're in.
That's genuinely good news. But it also creates a new problem: with that much on the shelf, it's easy to freeze up and never actually start. So let me save you the scrolling.
What You Get, No Matter Which Course You Pick
Every course on the platform shares four things in common:
It's self-paced and free. You fit it around your shift, not the other way around.
You get an official completion badge when you finish — something you can actually point to.
It's built for every skill level, from someone who's never opened Claude to a developer working with the API.
It's more than lectures. There are short tutorials and real use-case breakdowns mixed in.
Now, the part that actually matters: which one is your starting point?
If You're New to All This — The L1 Tech, the Office Worker
If you're just getting your feet wet with Claude — answering tickets, writing emails, doing research, anything day-to-day — start with Claude 101. It's the foundation everything else on the platform assumes you already have. It covers how to write prompts that actually get you useful answers, how to organize your work with Projects and Artifacts, and how to use Claude for the stuff you're already doing every day. If you only take one course off this list, take this one first.
If You're Managing People — Build Judgment, Not Just Skills
If you're the one deciding how your team uses AI, not just using it yourself, your course is AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations — 14 lessons, about 4 hours. This one isn't about clicking buttons in Claude. It teaches what's called the 4Ds framework: Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence — basically, how to decide what you hand off to AI, how to describe the task well, and how to actually check the work that comes back. If you're planning to roll AI out across your team the way I have, this is where you build the judgment to do it responsibly instead of just throwing a tool at people.
If You Write Code — Skip the Deep End for Now
Developers, don't start with the nine-hour API deep-dive. Start with Claude Code 101. It only takes about an hour, and it covers reading files, running commands, editing code, and automating multi-step tasks straight from your terminal. It's the fastest way to go from curious to actually shipping something with Claude Code — and if the work still calls for it after that, the deeper API courses are right there waiting.
If You Run a Service Desk — This One's Personal for Me
And if you're running a small support team like I do, your course is Introduction to Claude Cowork — 14 lessons, about 2.5 hours. This one is about delegating whole tasks, not just chatting back and forth in a window. It covers connecting Claude to your inbox, setting up recurring scheduled tasks, and building reusable Skills your whole team can rely on. I've spent my whole career trying to push service desks from reactive firefighting into something more proactive — SLA optimization, faster resolution times, all of it — and this is one of the few free tools I've seen that actually helps a small team get there without a six-figure ITSM platform behind it.
How to Actually Start
Three steps, that's it:
Go to academy.claude.com.
Pick the course that matches where you are right now — office worker, manager, developer, or service desk.
Sign up with your email and begin. It's self-paced, so finish it today or spread it over a few weeks.
The Honest Truth
The best time to start learning this stuff was yesterday. The second best time is right now, while it's still completely free and there's a course built for exactly where you're standing. Go pick yours.
If this helped, stick around — I write about ITSM, AI, and building leaner IT operations over at Digital Dojo 360.
